Outbox and Garage48 earlier in April 2014 entered into a 2 year partnership that will see volunteers from Garage48 assist with Outbox Uganda programs and strategy for the main Garage 48 event; a 48-hour hackathon (and coding) event with the goal of building technological products in under 48 hours continuously for 2 days and nights.
This event is being organized by the Garage48 Foundation which was launched in 2010 by six startup entrepreneurs who met thanks to the Estonian Startup Leaders Club.
What Is Garage48? Garage48 is an event that provides an opportunity to people with different skills to pitch ideas, gather teams and build a working prototype during the weekend. There has been a good success with these events with 33 events happening in 12 countries so far with 2,500 participants, more than 800 ideas pitched and nearly 400 prototypes built. Garage48 held it’s first event in Uganda in 2011 supported by Google and MTN Uganda. 11 prototypes were built from that event. One of them, Mafutago (an app to help motorists find the nearest fuel station with low prices) became 2nd runner-up during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
This 2-year partnership is being funded by the Estonian Ministry of Foreign affairs and is already working on a Garage48 hackathon slated for September 2014.
