This year’s AfricaCom Awards event, which is focused on celebrating and acknowledging leaders in digital technology, ICT, Telecommunications and Media across Africa is scheduled to take place on 12th November, 2014 in Cape Town, South Africa.
The annual awards event attracted 161 entries this year, a number the organizers say went beyond what was expected.
“The overall quality of the entries this year surpassed expectation. The innovation taking place in the digital ecosystem across the entire continent is heartening and also world class,” said Adam Thompson, the Research manager at Informa Telecoms & Media.
He said many participants are leaders in their fields and pioneers of new technology and services answering the needs of emerging markets that more traditional markets can and should take note of.
The nominated candidates have been named, with Orange being listed under most categories, which include but not limited to Best App for Africa, Best Connectivity Solutions, Best Marketing campaign, Best Mobile Money Solution, Best Pan African Initiative, Breakthrough LTE Development among others.
Other categories for the awards include the Excellence in Customer Experience Management category under which Safaricom, for its Customer Care support for the M-PESA platform, and Bharti Airtel for its Airtel Premier have been shortlisted.
Bharti Airtel is also among those shortlisted under the Changing Lives Awards category for its Ebola initiative, alongside Orange with its Digital School Project. Bharti Airtel’s Airtel Money has also received nomination in the Best Mobile Money solution category.
In the VSAT Innovation for Africa category, Liquid Telecom has received nomination for its Shared MPLS satellite service.
Tanzania’s Tigo Pesa, a mobile money transfer service has also received nomination under the Most Innovative Service category alongside companies like Econet, Opera Software and Huawei.
This year’s conference is expected to carry a programme hosting new topics that are affecting companies in Africa’s digital market, with an experience of strategic content from over 300 business organisations and digital giants representing the communications ecosystem across Africa and beyond.
