The county government of Nyeri in Kenya is inviting software developers and interested parties to attend a three-day technology competition that will see the winner get a prize of KES 50,000.
The three day tech event dubbed Nyeri Civic Hack and organised in collaboration with the Computer society of Dedan Kimathi University in the county will start at 6.00pm on October 31 and close on November 2.
The Nyeri Civic Hack is a development activity that will require participants to work together in addressing civic challenges and provide an opportunity for app development. The apps to be developed will centre on encouraging various sectors to trade online.
Sectors to be addressed for better and effective management of records will include farming, health, public infrastructure, local security as well as the county government utilities such as parking and business licensing.
Applications developed will be presented on the last day of the event to a team of judges, who will then chose the winner.
“We want ICT experts to come up with solutions that ordinary Kenyans can relate to. Those involved will see their work used to improve livelihoods and provide solutions to daily civic challenges,” said Elijah Nguyo, Nyeri ICT executive.
Under the theme ‘Real life Solutions to Daily Civic Challenges’, the event will bring together about 150 participants including software developers, entrepreneurs, academicians, data geeks and common citizens.
“Our event is open to everyone. You don’t have to be an expert in technology, you just need to care about your neighbourhood and community,” said the Nyeri Civic Hack team in a post.
Kenyans interested in participating in the event are encouraged to register through the Nyeri Civic Hack website, after which they will be required to carry their laptop to the tech show which will be held at Kimathi University in the county.
“Come meet interesting people, learn about the civic hacking movement and learn something awesome”.
The event is OPEN TO EVERYONE.
