Tigo Tanzania Launches Free Access To Basic Internet Service

TIGO TANZANIA LAUNCHES FREE BASIC INTERNET JUUCHINI

Tigo Tanzania will now allow its subscribers to access basic online services at no cost through Facebook’s Internet.org app, as part of efforts to provide affordable internet to customers across the country.

Tigo collaborated with Facebook to offer Tanzanians the new offer, which will also see the network provider give its customers an opportunity to purchase affordable smartphones through which to freely access a number of sites including, education, health, news and social communication sites.

The partnership with Facebook aims to allow for fast internet penetration in the country as well as open new socio-economic opportunities to the users in the fields of technology, commerce and education.

Internet.org app, which enables people to browse a set of useful information services without any charges for data access was first launched in Zambia to Airtel customers with plans to roll out the app in more countries around the world.

Now the app has been made available in Tanzania to Tigo subscribers who will be able to access various sites including but not limited to OLX (online marketplace), Facebook, BBC News & BBC Swahili, Brighter Monday (a jobs website), SuperSport, Wikipedia and a website designed to provide information to expecting mothers, BabyCenter & MAMA.

“Through our partnership with Facebook we aim to increase digital inclusion by encouraging even more Tanzanians to go online,” said David Zacharia, Head of Data and Devices at Tigo.

Internet.org app is available for download to Tigo customers in Tanzania on the Google Play Store, the internet.org and Tigo websites and also through a bookmark on the Opera Mini browser.

The app is available for customers using smartphones as well as the feature phones.
